02 Apr The Best Garage Floor Coating for your Money
If you’re in the market for the best garage floor coating for your residential or commercial garage, it’s important you understand what your options are and which one will be the best for your needs.
Why a Warranty Is So Important
We’ve brought this up before, but it bears repeating: warranties for garage floor concrete coating installations are important.
They’re so important, in fact, that we don’t think any option should be considered the best garage floor coating on the market – or anywhere close – if it doesn’t come with a warranty. There’s simply too much at risk when installing coatings to not have a warranty to protect your investment.
Different Types of Floor Coatings and Their Prices
Let’s look at the more common forms of floor coatings and estimates of what you might end up spending for them.
- Waterborne Epoxy Paint – This is the type of option that most people use for DIY applications. We’ll talk about this version in more detail next, but, suffice it to say, it is not the best garage floor coating on the market.
- High Solids Epoxy – These are commercial-grade options. They have a good degree of resistance to abrasions, chemicals and stains. As their name suggests, they also come with the highest content of solids – all the way up to 100%. You will spend at least $115 for enough to cover 250 sq. feet.
- Clear Epoxy or Polyurethane Top Coats – If you’d like to improve upon a single coat of the last option, you’d add a coat or two of this coating. Not only will it improve its durability and thickness; it will also give your floor an attractive amount of shine and gloss.
- Premium Multi-Coat Epoxy System – This is the best option. It comes with a primer coat, a 100% solid base-coat, either a polyurethane, polyaspartic or clear epoxy topcoat and, if you want, acrylic paint chips. Often, floors with this type of coating are between 30 to 40 ml thick. We highly recommend hiring a professional company utilizing dealer-grade product that isn’t something you can buy off the shelf for a great long-term value.
Now, let’s talk about DIY coatings for your garage.
Be Careful with DIY Garage Coatings
DIY garage coatings have become somewhat popular but don’t expect that trend to last for long. To put it simply, the potential pitfalls of DIY flooring installation are just not worth it. Unless you have a professional background installing these coatings, you’re going to find yourself in over your head.
It’s going to take longer than you thought, cost more than you budgeted and still probably won’t turn out the way you had hoped. As such, you’re going to end up spending more having the work redone the right way.
